I usually post-date my FM post on Sunday but I was under the impression that post-dating was "illegal" and the Nablo Po Po would come and get me. Seriously, I thought it was against the Nablome "rules" to post-date.
Anyone is welcome to join Fun Monday. You just sign up in the comments of the host/hostess of the Fun Monday that tickles your fancy. You post about the topic of choice on your own blog linking back to the host/hostess. Now on with the show.

The Humble Housewife is today's Fun Monday Hostess. She has asked us to write about holiday traditions. She was really interested in the family recipes. Are you kidding me? Those are in the safe!

I have to say that Thanksgiving is just not Thanksgiving without my Aunt's 7 layer salad. I'm just not able to be grateful without that salad. Because food is really what Thanksgiving is all about, right?

7-Layer Salad

  • 1 head shredded lettuce
  • 1cup chopped green pepper
  • 1cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup chopped green onion
  • 1 box of frozen peas
Layer in order in a 9x13 pan. Mix together 2 cups Mayo (NO Miracle whip) with 2 Tablespoons Sugar. Spread over the salad. Cover with aprox 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese. Fry 1lb bacon crumble and sprinkle over the cheese. Cover and let set in fridge overnight.

Christmas is my favorite holiday/time of year. I love all the decorations and I have very fond memories of Christmas at my Grandparents farm. There were 7 grandchildren. My Grandma made us each our own tiny stocking with out names stitched on them. She would have them hung up with a candy cane each plus a small piece of paper. When it was time. She would hand out our stockings and the hunt was on! On the piece of paper was a clue that would lead you to the next clue. That clue would lead you to another, then that clue would lead you to your small gift. The gift was usually something that she had cross stitched, like a Christmas ornament. I also remember singing Christmas songs around the piano, and making tiny boxes out of last years Christmas cards. Here is her sleigh of "gifts" that my Mom got when her Mom passed away. My Mom gave me a lot of the decorations from my Grandma.
Here is one Christmas recipe...

Rum Balls
  • 1cup finely chopped walnuts
  • 2 1/2 cup finely crushed vanilla wafers
  • 5 Tablespoon Karo syrup
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup Rum( I use Captain Morgan's)
  • 1/2 to 1 Cup of powdered sugar
Mix Crushed wafers & walnuts in a large bowl. Stir in rum and Karo syrup. Shape mixture into 1 inch balls. Roll in powdered sugar. Cover tightly & refrigerate at least 3 days before serving to blend flavors.

One tradition I have with my kids is to make reindeer from construction paper using their hands and a foot. The foot is the face and their hands are the antlers. I enjoy looking at the collection of reindeer to see how much they have grown over the years.

Now go check out The Humble Housewife for the list of all the participants this week and what traditions they have to share.

opps I forgot! 5 Nablomedwn 25 to go!

Is the rum strong in that recipe? I always shy away from alcohol desserts because I don't like the flavor to be overpowering. Jello shots, of course, are an exception. ;)

I personally do not think the rum is strong or overpowering. Using Captain Morgans makes it more subtle than say plain white rum.

I love the story of your grandmother sending you on a search for your gift. Too sweet!

You have some great memories of your Grandma and holidays. I kind of forgot about it when I was writing my post, but my Grandma would make tons of cookies every Christmas and give each person (no matter the age) a coffee can full of cookies. They were yummy!

That's a neat idea, to make little boxes out of last year's cards. Neat idea!

Are there really NaBloPoMo police out there??? ;)

It's funny how the holiday just wouldn't be the same without a certain recipe, isn't it?

SS~ yes she was very sweet!

beckie~ The Grandma I mentioned in my post made all kinds of cookies too and sent every family home with a coffee can or kool whip tub full of cookies and bars. My other Grandma was the one that made the rum balls. She also made divinity, fudge, and Peanut brittle.

I made rum balls for my brother when he was in 'Nam. I doubled the alcohol (they were GI's, you know) and failed to factor in the difference in weather. If it was winter where I was, it was winter, you know? Anyway, they melted into a glob, no one knew what it was and they fed it to the company dog. He died. I was requested o keep thos cards and letters coming but to quit cooking!

susan~ No I dont think so but I thought I read somewhere about no post dating...
It is funny like that!

sandy~ Oh no! that poor dog! But what a funny story!

Ah, the pea salad. It's a Thanksgiving staple here, too. You either love it (for the peas) or hate it (for the peas).

Your grandma's stocking gift hunt tradition sounds like a ton of fun!

Why am I not surprised that the holiday recipe you chose to share is for rum balls?;o) I do love rum balls.

I wish my grandparents thought up a scavenger hunt. What a great idea. And, I'm with you on preserving the hand/feet prints.

jenni~ As a kid I picked out the green onion. I made it one year without and it wasn't right.
It was a ton of fun!!
You think I'm some kinda lush, don't you? I just didn't want to share my other Grandmas more "famous" recipes!

ann~ It is delicious! Your welcome!

AFF~ I may never have done them in plaster but they are on construction paper in the form of Rudolph!

I love 7-layer salad. I havent' had it in so long - i think I need to make one.

I think your grandma's tradition of hunting for the gift is a lovely idea and such fun for children. You have made me think about the wonderful trifle my grandma always made for Christmas tea. She made it in what I remember as being a huge glass dish. I have that dish now and it doesn't look that big!!

Love rumballs...:)

OOO, we made a Santa Plate at a pottery joint with RePete's foot for the face and Pete's hands for the antlers. I never thought about doing it each year to see the growth. Dang.

Love the Grandma tradition. Let's just say my Grandma wasn't the cookies baking, present hiding kind. :-) I missed out!

I like the reindeer making tradition. I wish I had somebody to make me divinity. I love it so much and I don't have a lot of luck when I make it.

Oooh, your recipes sound delicious. Your Grandma's tradition sounds wonderful; she must have understood children very well.

I love the paper reindeer idea. I just came across a handprint my daughter made in preschool. I know it was the exact size of he hand but man, it is so tiny now! I don't even remember when she was that small.

The rum balls are sounding good. Can you taste the rum much? I'd love to feed my teetotaling family a few and see what happens!

I love the idea of the hunt for your christmas gift. That sounds like fun!

I will have to try the reindeer with my grandchildren. I have a wreath made out of cut out handprints and the berries are thumb prints. I hang it up every year even though the grandson is 13 now and he made it in kindergarten.

The scavenger hunt sounds like great fun. My friend and I used to make rum balls with my mum beofre Christmas. We used to sneak pieces and think that we were getting drunk.

We were very young.

Love the recipes - the salad sounds fab. No more Nilla wafers for me since moving to ireland. ;-( Your Grandma sounds so sweet! Thanks for sharing!

I have some of those reindeer cutouts from my wee one - but she isn't wee anymore, and won't hold still long enough to let me trace anything.

Oh, and I have to post mine "postdated" a few hours - the day before for NaBloPoMo...so I write each post a day ahead, and publish before I go to bed, with the time of midnight-o-one. That way, I can honestly say I'm writing each day - but I'm a day ahead, helping with the pressure. Make sense? (I, too, fear the NaBloPoMo police. I know they are clowns in one of those little cars.)

e, I was looking for a spot for the vodka in the salad recipe**LOL**. I got to try those rum balls though.
